Small Meiji period vase (1870–1920)
This exquisite vase is an authentic example of Japanese applied arts from the Meiji period (1870–1920). It represents the renowned Satsuma ware style, which gained great popularity among European collectors around 1900.
The central decorative motif is the chrysanthemum—an imperial symbol of Japan representing longevity and prosperity. Every detail is carefully hand-painted using rich enamel colors, while the pronounced raised gilding adds a luxurious, textured depth. The piece also features the characteristic cream-toned body with fine crackle (crazing), typical of Satsuma ware.
The vase was made in Japan as a high-quality export piece for Western markets. The number “245” on the base likely indicates a specific design series.
