Meri Lasi “Volcano” vintage glass candle holder | Pertti Kallioinen, Finland
A striking Finnish vintage glass candle holder from the renowned Volcano (Tulivuori) collection, dating from the second half of the 20th century, circa the 1970s–1980s. A sculptural example of Scandinavian Mid-Century Modern design with Brutalist influences, created by Finnish designer Pertti Kallioinen. Its unusual shape combines solid, clear glass, organic lines and a texture reminiscent of natural ice.
The candle holder is made of thick, textured glass with three raised sections of different heights, resembling small volcanoes. Each has a recess for a tealight. When the candles are lit, the textured glass surface beautifully refracts and reflects the light, creating a distinctive glow and a cosy atmosphere.
The Volcano series is a recognisable example of Finnish decorative glass design. Candle holders of this type were made in various versions, with different numbers of candle recesses. This particular piece was produced at the Meri Lasi glassworks in Finland and retains its original blue manufacturer's label.
This decorative candle holder will fit beautifully into both modern and classic interiors. A lovely accent on a coffee table, chest of drawers or dining table, bringing a touch of 1970s Scandinavian charm and sculptural elegance to the room. Even without candles, it serves as a standalone design object.
